Collection: 6 Mil Vapor Barrier

Shop 6 mil polyethylene vapor barriers for approved flooring installations over concrete. Choose from the available 200 and 500 square foot rolls, then confirm the moisture layer required by your flooring manufacturer. Add the correct barrier to your project alongside the floor and compatible finishing materials.

What Does 6 Mil Mean?

Mil is a unit of thickness equal to one thousandth of an inch. A 6 mil sheet is approximately 0.006 inch thick, or 0.1524mm. It is not a 6mm thick cushioning pad.

This collection is selected for products identified as 6 mil moisture or vapor barriers. They serve a different purpose from soft acoustic underlayment, flooring adhesive or a decorative plank. Use the layer specified for the actual installation rather than choosing by a similar product name.

A Moisture Layer for the Approved Assembly

A polyethylene vapor barrier is used where the flooring manufacturer requires or permits it as part of moisture protection over a substrate. It does not resolve a leak, a structurally unsuitable slab or moisture conditions outside the flooring system's limits.

Concrete still needs the prescribed assessment and preparation. A waterproof plank does not necessarily block vapor from below. Confirm the required assembly before installation, including how the sheet should be joined and treated around the room.

Attached Pad and Vapor Protection Have Different Jobs

A factory attached pad supports the flooring assembly and can contribute to underfoot feel or acoustic behavior. It should not automatically be treated as the required vapor barrier over concrete.

Republic Floor's current covered SPC guide requires a 6 mil polyethylene layer over concrete and does not permit an additional cushioning pad. Other floors have their own instructions. Review the actual product rather than applying that requirement universally to every brand or installation.

Choose the Appropriate Roll Coverage

The current selection includes Republic Floor rolls listed at 200 and 500 square feet, plus a Lions Floor SPC barrier listed at 500 square feet per roll. Choose the format around the size and layout of the project.

Allow for the overlaps and edge treatment required by the actual installation instructions when calculating coverage. Nominal roll coverage and usable project coverage need not be identical. Do not assume one roll covers a room simply because the floor area equals the printed roll area.

Plan the Barrier With the Flooring

Confirm that a loose sheet barrier is permitted beneath the chosen flooring system. An adhesive installation can need a different moisture treatment from a floating floor, and an extra sheet should not be added without system approval.

Explore SPC flooring for concrete slabs for related floor options. For approved heated assemblies, browse SPC flooring for radiant heat and confirm that the heating and moisture layers are coordinated.

Add the Required Materials to the Order

Select the roll coverage and brand suitable for your approved assembly, then review the number of rolls needed with the installer. Order the appropriate seam treatment separately where the manufacturer's instructions require it; do not assume tape is included.

Plan the floor, moisture layer and compatible transitions together so the project materials are ready for installation. The grid above keeps the selection focused on 6 mil vapor barriers, with ordinary cushioning underlayment excluded from this category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 6 mil the same as 6mm?

No. A 6 mil sheet is about 0.1524mm thick. Mil and millimeter are different units.

Does attached flooring pad replace a vapor barrier?

Not automatically. Use the moisture layer required by the actual flooring manufacturer's installation instructions.

Can I place a loose barrier under any glue down floor?

No. Use the moisture treatment approved for the complete adhesive and flooring assembly.

Does nominal roll coverage include installation overlaps?

Do not assume so. Calculate the usable coverage using the manufacturer's overlap and edge requirements.
