Knowing how to compare vinyl plank thickness helps you avoid paying for bulk when what your kitchen, rental, or commercial space really needs is a stronger wear layer, a better core, or an installation method that fits the subfloor.

Thickness matters, but it is only one part of the performance picture. The right choice depends on where the floor is going, how smooth the subfloor is, how much traffic it will see, and whether you are installing floating click-lock planks or glue-down LVP.

How to Compare Vinyl Plank Thickness the Right Way

Start by separating total plank thickness from wear-layer thickness. They are measured differently and do different jobs.

Total thickness is usually listed in millimeters, such as 4 mm, 5 mm, 6.5 mm, or 8 mm. It includes the full construction of the plank: the backing, core, printed design layer, clear protective wear layer, and attached pad if the product has one.

The wear layer is the clear top surface that protects the printed wood or stone design from scratches, scuffs, stains, and daily wear. It is commonly measured in mil, which is one-thousandth of an inch. A 12 mil wear layer is not 12 mm thick. This is one of the most common points of confusion when comparing vinyl flooring online.

A thicker plank can feel more solid underfoot and may do a better job bridging minor subfloor imperfections. But a plank with a thin wear layer may still show wear sooner in a busy home. Compare both numbers before deciding which product offers better value.

What Total Thickness Actually Changes

Overall thickness affects installation, comfort, sound, and how forgiving the floor can be over a less-than-perfect surface. It does not automatically determine scratch resistance.

Thinner vinyl planks: 2 mm to 4 mm

Thin vinyl plank is most common in glue-down products. Because it is adhered directly to the subfloor, it has a stable, low-profile feel and works well where door clearance or transitions are tight. It is a practical option for apartments, rentals, retail spaces, and large areas where a dependable glue-down installation makes sense.

The trade-off is subfloor preparation. Glue-down vinyl follows the surface beneath it, so dips, ridges, and debris can telegraph through over time. A thin plank is not a shortcut around leveling work.

Mid-range planks: 4.5 mm to 6.5 mm

This range covers many popular click-lock LVP and SPC vinyl plank options. It gives homeowners a comfortable balance of value, durability, and easier floating-floor installation. For a living room, bedroom, hallway, or average kitchen, a quality product in this range can be an excellent fit.

Look closely at the core and wear layer. A 5.5 mm SPC plank with a 20 mil wear layer may be a stronger choice for active family use than a thicker product with only a 6 mil or 8 mil wear layer.

Thicker planks: 7 mm and up

Thicker vinyl plank often feels more substantial and can help reduce minor subfloor irregularities, particularly in floating installations. Many thicker options include an attached pad, which can add walking comfort and soften sound. These floors are popular for main living areas, upstairs rooms, and renovation projects where a more finished feel is a priority.

Still, thick does not mean indestructible. Heavy furniture can dent any floating floor if the product is not protected properly, and a thick plank with a light-duty wear layer is not automatically the right fit for a busy entryway or rental turnover.

Compare the Wear Layer Before Comparing Price

If appearance retention is your priority, the wear layer deserves as much attention as total thickness. It is the surface that takes the daily hits from chair legs, pet nails, shoes, rolling traffic, and cleaning.

For low-traffic bedrooms or lightly used spaces, a 6 mil or 8 mil wear layer may be enough, depending on the product and your expectations. For most active homes, 12 mil is a solid starting point. A 20 mil wear layer is a popular choice for households with kids, pets, frequent guests, or busy kitchens. Higher wear layers, often 22 mil to 30 mil, are commonly chosen for rentals, offices, retail areas, and light commercial settings.

Wear-layer thickness is not the only quality marker. The finish matters too. A quality urethane or ceramic-bead coating can improve stain and scratch resistance. But when two planks have similar construction and finish, the thicker wear layer generally provides more long-term protection.

Core Type Changes the Meaning of Thickness

Two planks with the same total thickness can perform very differently because their cores are different.

SPC vinyl plank

SPC stands for stone plastic composite. Its rigid mineral-based core is dense, stable, and highly resistant to dents from everyday use. SPC is a smart option for kitchens, bathrooms, entryways, rentals, and high-traffic spaces. It is also well suited to areas that may experience temperature changes, though every product should be installed within its stated requirements.

SPC can feel firmer underfoot than other vinyl constructions. An attached pad can improve comfort, but it does not turn a rigid floor into a soft one. If dent resistance and waterproof performance are the priorities, SPC is often worth a close look.

WPC vinyl plank

WPC uses a wood-plastic composite core. It is typically thicker and more cushioned underfoot than SPC, which makes it appealing for bedrooms, living rooms, and spaces where comfort matters. WPC is waterproof, but its softer core can be more susceptible to indentation from heavy furniture or concentrated loads.

Choose WPC when you want a warmer, quieter walking feel and the room is not likely to take repeated impacts from heavy equipment, rolling loads, or sharp furniture legs.

Glue-down LVP

Glue-down luxury vinyl plank is flexible rather than rigid. It is often thinner, but that does not make it inferior. When installed over a properly prepared subfloor, it delivers excellent stability, easy replacement of individual planks, and a low-profile finish. For commercial projects, rental properties, and spaces with lots of rolling traffic, glue-down can be the most practical choice.

Do Not Double-Count an Attached Pad

Many click-lock vinyl planks include a pre-attached underlayment pad. That pad may be included in the advertised thickness. For example, a product listed as 6.5 mm could include a 5 mm plank plus a 1.5 mm pad.

That is not misleading, but it changes how you should compare products. The core and surface layers provide structural performance, while the pad mainly supports comfort and sound reduction. If one 6.5 mm plank includes a thick pad and another has a thicker rigid core, they may not perform the same way.

Also check the manufacturer instructions before adding another underlayment. Some attached-pad products should not have additional padding underneath, and using the wrong underlayment can affect locking performance or warranty coverage.

Match Thickness to the Room, Not Just the Trend

For a bathroom, laundry room, or kitchen, waterproof construction and a suitable wear layer matter more than chasing the highest overall thickness. SPC with at least a 12 mil wear layer is often a practical target for an active household.

For a bedroom or low-traffic living space, a mid-range click-lock floor can deliver comfort and good value without overspending on commercial-grade specifications. In a rental, office, or busy hallway, focus on a durable wear layer, stable core, and installation type that supports fast repairs and long-term maintenance.

Subfloor condition should also guide the decision. A thicker rigid-core plank can be more forgiving of minor imperfections, but it cannot correct major unevenness. Check the product's flatness requirements and address significant dips or high spots before installation. Better prep protects the locking system, improves the finished look, and helps prevent movement underfoot.

When comparing product pages or samples, line up the same details for every option: total thickness in mm, wear layer in mil, core type, attached pad, installation method, and warranty use classification. Then consider the room, the traffic level, and the condition of the subfloor.
